Thanks
to the guys at Arecibo for this weekend. I listened solid
signals in SSB, CW and JT mode, with a ft 847 and a DEMI uhf 25
elements ATV antenna, at GG66.
Some times the signals rise to S1 with the preamp, and i could
listen all the time with the preamp off. Tried to call with only 50
w...
My amp failed and the 2 x 28 elements antennas of the main station
were very bad.... so i did a garden setup and works great...
The simplicity is the last stage of the complexity.... Thanks
to all,

Hi All!
I took my children and have done mini UHF field day.
We was listening KP4AO signal here in Israel KM72OC with RST 519 (most
of time it was good readable copy) during 19:00 to 19:30.
Next setup was used:
FT-897D, 6-ele Yagi, no LNA
Many thanks for Arecibo team.

I also did a FD on my
backyard, hi.
I had an hard time to point the 21 elem yagi
to the moon (it was cloudy and rainy), but
around 1930z I heard them on CW 519!
WOW. I couldn't belive that signal was
coming via the moon! What a thrill.
Congratulations to all involved on this
amazing experiment.

P.S. I also have no

OK, I know nobody is
going to believe this but....on my life...
I have been outside
with an FT-817 connected via a very short piece of
coax to a Diamond A430S10R (small 10 element beam modified for handheld
use) and headphones and KP4AO was just audible on SSB.
Signals were inconsistent
but solid enough to copy their callsign and CQ
calls around 19.00UTC and the odd information exchange thereafter.
Now they've switched
to CW copy is a good 80%.
No signal strength showing
on S-Meter of course but who cares.
I would never have believed
it had I not heard it with my own ears.
Note: NO preamp was
used.

Then I switched to Spanish and he came right back.
Does that mean anything??? Hi Hi.
I hope the KP4AO thing

Was not lucky enough
to break the pileups, but did have solid signals
from Arecibo most of the weekend.? I took Friday off trying to beat the
crowds, but found my 432 xvtr was not functioning and spent most of the
window fixing the xvtr.? Got it fixed just in time to hear a few CQ's
from them before they ran out of moon.? They were only about 519 when
I
heard them on Friday when they were running 20(?) watts.? Saturday they
started out about 6-12db above the noise on SSB before the tube amp
failed.? After switching to the solid state amp, they were pretty solid
at around 12db above the noise on SSB and 18db on CW.? Sunday they were
only about 6db above the noise with some QSB on SSB and pretty solid at
around 18db on CW.? When they switched to JT65 they were 18db above the
noise -3 on JT65 with about 6db of QSB.? I recorded the 96KHz passband
for most of both passes from the Flex 5000a.? If anyone from the Arecibo
team wants the files let me know and I can burn to DVD (1-2GB per
recorded segment) and I can send it over.
Thanks guys for the
excitement (even though no completion).

... Saturday I copied
solid signals from DL7APV about 6db out of the
noise on JT65 (-14).? Today I copied DL7APV again at -11, UA3PTW -16,
PI9CAM -14.? All of them had good audible signals.? KP4AO was -3 for
reference.? After the Arecibo window I copied SM4IVE on CW (319-519),
HB9Q on CW (319-519) and quickly worked PI9CAM (-13) and HB9Q (-12) on
JT65 for my first two 432 completions.? Didn't hear or see any other

Yesterday I set up my
10-ft 432 Yagi on some lawn chairs in the back
yard, with a Mirage D1010N amp running off a marine battery.? I used?an
FT-817, and did actually hear some CW off the moon from Arecibo.? It was
very weak, and I could only copy it?less than?20% of the time.? The
noise figure on the 817 is probably 10-15 db at 432, and it really
needed a preamp which I don't have (yet).? But I was encouraged that
portable EME using the 817 will be possible with a preamp, especially
using WSJT instead of CW.?
I have been operating
EME for some time but I am new to 432.? ?
Today I used the same
antenna but listened on my K3/XV-432 and the
results were much better.? I was listening on WSJT mode, and copied
Arecibo for?some time.? I called but TX problems prevented me from
making a QSO (and the pileup!)? ?I could easily hear them through the
speaker, best result was -18db on the single 18-el yagi and 25 ft of
RG-213!? Amazing!? This was a real thrill.?
THANK YOU to everyone
down there, and I hope you can do it again!?

We set up a small (11
el) yagi fixed at 65 degrees on a stand in the
backyard, 30 ft of LMR600 and a preamp in the shack to an FT-847. Didn't
expect to hear much but was able to copy 3x3 SSB signals, 4x5 CW and -10
(!) JT65B. Decoded every transmission on JT65B- amazing....I was calling
JT65B on 049, I think that was the message they displayed on the video
feed, but no luck getting thru. I am sure that my 100w could have easily
been decoded with their -10 signal to me but the QRM even on JT65 must
have been fierce ! The QSO rate on JT65 was limiting, of course - took
about 5 minutes per QSO, but it does give the very small stations (like
mine) a real chance to work them.
Fantastic job, guys....can't wait till next time.

with 4 Watts 569/559 (RST EME!*). For me: 6m dish,
300W, NF>1dB (BFR91!).
I thought as a joke local station!
* RST EME: S5 = good,
S6 = Very good the max. R5 = Perfect (95%).
Now, a new standard is necessary because it is everything and anything.

a tower, rig, KW amp, antennas and everything else to make it all happen.
It was a great event!

I copied them here at
432.0446 in CW using a Yaesu FT-817ND and Elk
dual-band yagi with 6 feet of RG8X between the antenna and the radio,
no
preamp. I copied them in CW between 1958 and 2000 UTC here, then
switched to my FT-857D (which will transmit 20 watts on 70cm instead of
the 817's 5) just as they were switching to JT65B. When I heard the
digital mode, I quickly set up my Acer netbook and SignaLink USB, and
copied multiple contacts in the digital mode quite easily - again with
just the Elk and no preamp.
Congratulations to the
stations I copied KP4AO working in JT65B this
afternoon - UA4FRL, AF6O, W1ICW, SQ7DQX, SV2DCD, UR4UAR and SV2RM.
I tried to reach them
in JT65B, and threw all 20 watts at them, too ...
hihi. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
What a thrill to hear
and copy them on the QRP radio in CW and in the
digital weak-signal mode. My congratulations and thanks to Joe Taylor,
K1JT,
and the KP4AO club for organizing and staging the event.

I forgot to add earlier
that signal readings during the JT65B operation
were in the -20 dB range. One peaked at -18 dB; the others stayed
between -20 dB and -22 dB.
I sat on my patio and
pointed the Elk at the sliver of the moon I could
see at roughly 80 degrees elevation, just to my south.
Radio - Yaesu FT-857D
Power - Panasonc gel cell battery
Antenna - Elk 2M/440L5

I was successful working
KP4AO and it was quite a thrill for me. The
first day, signals were weak. I didn't copy them on USB, but was able
to
hear them about 40-50% on CW. I called and called for the entire time.
(CW) We were taking down the station of W4AD (SK), who enjoyed EME. My
hope was to make one last contact from his back yard. Unfortunately, it
didn't work out the first day.
On day 2, I set up a
station my back yard. KP4AO was louder and I was
able to copy USB, but the QSB always hit at the wrong time. Inevitably,
I heard 599 and 'over'! When KP4AO switched to CW, I was able to copy
them about 80% of the time with the QSB. Finally, at 16:25 Eastern, I
worked them on CW with my 23 element K1FO yagi, TS-2K, preamp and 175W.
I tried several different TX frequencies and was very persistent. The
S-Meter never moved and it was like working a typical weak VHF signal.
My report is at: http://www.stu2.net/wiki/index.php/MT_Arecibo
Thanks to the gang at
KP4AO for all their work. I really appreciate your

was just as special. Again - thanks!

I worked the all Sunday
afternoon to reach a small station installed at
home, tonna 21el yagi - 90w brick (50w on the antenna) and not preamp,
radio was FT-817 (impress me running well with no preamp), KP4AO was
always with a tremendous signal, I was able to copy perfect the SSB
part, I call several times in CW but no chance, in JT I try, and try and
but also no answer, one hour before they start I did my first EME
contact with DL7APV, he was -25 and half hour later I did Dan, HB9Q with
-21, both first contacts confirm me system was working well, KP4AO was
here most of the time -2, extremely loud. I was expecting and easy job
I feel frustrated because
it supposed such a BIG dish will give the
advantage for small stations, any way at least after years of doing EME
in HB9Q Arecibo motivate me to install something at home, even against
the curios looks of my neighbors, next step will be 2xM2 and 1kw SSPA,
I
have the preamp but I didn't manage to install on time.

details of how they fed the dish etc.

Hi, I have been around
looking for KP4AO during the weekend and done
some very interesting experiences.Saturday afternoon strong winds
prevented me to move my small dish,? but in the evening I joined my old
time friends IK5AMB and IK5VLS for a UHF field day and a fine dinner at
their QTH.With ?a 25 el shark horizontal ?L.Y. (5,5 mt boom), cavity
preamp a d IC7000 we followed the SSB pileup for more than a hour ,
KP4AO peaking up to s5 at times... fine!
Sundaynafternoon I had
the surprise to receive my first SSTV images on
23 cm during a test from PI9CAM, their text was clear , not bad for a
2,4 mts dish.
Later I put again on
a tripode my tiny 9 el yagi? tonna (1 mt boom)? in
vertical ,? plugged a 0,4db NF preamp on the dipole and with my FT847:
KP4AO'sSSB was unreadable, CW was 339 at times with deep qsb, while
?JT65B? was always decoded ?with best sigs at -17 to me.
Soon I will put recordings
/images ?on my web page.
Final results: ZERO
QSO, but a lot o fun, a great weekend! THANKS TO
EVERYBODY , KP4AO, PI9CAM and EOA crews.

I had better luck with
KP4AO off the moon today. It was raining
yesterday so I just took the FT790R MKII and the 8 element WA5VJB Yagi.
I had an ARR preamp, but it did not work. I could hear the occasional
dit and dah, but not much else.
Today, I fixed the 2
broken directors on the 11 element WA5VJB Yagi and
got the power to the preamp fixed. That made a big difference. I also
hauled the TS-2000X out on the deck. I still couldn't copy them on SSB,
but I could hear them on CW all the time, and usually good enough to
copy their side of a complete CW exchange. Say 419 to 529. I did not try
a QSO as with the 50 Watt output power limit here in NM, that would have
been fruitless, but with 2 or 4 times the antenna it would have been
possible. Maybe next time. The moon was visible today so that made
pointing easier. I could not see the moon yesterday due to clouds and
it
did not have much contrast against the sky.
I couldn't hear any
sun noise, no surprise there, but when the
cumulonimbus clouds passed in front of the moon the noise went up a bit
which was neat to observe. And the noise increased 3 dB or so pointing
to the horizon. Lots of junk in the 70 cm RF ghetto.
When KP4AO switched
to JT65b, I thought I would be hosed with all the
birdies, but it heard right through all the birdies. Amazing. Once I got
things figured out, I could copy all of their JT65b transmissions. By
the time I had all of the software and hardware issues on my end sorted
out though, they had QRT. It was loads of fun though and a good way to
spend a spring Sunday afternoon. - Duffey

KP4AO provided lots
of fun for me this weekend. Listened Saturday with
old W0EYE yagi, only thing I could find in the barn. I copied them but
not as expected, But I had a thought when going to sleep last night.
This morning I pulled an old 10 foot TVRO dish from the barn. I
attached the reflector and driven element of the W0EYE at the focus and
set the dish outside the shack window. propped up on a saw horse for
elevation control, and waited for KP4AO's moon window. Surprise, Q4 on
SSB, soild 559 on CW and -3 on WSJT. Copied the entire pass FB. Only
downer was no QSO with my powerful 50 watts. SWR on the dish was 2.1 to
1 so output was rolled back by 50%. I should have taken time to
lenghten the folded dipole feed a 1/4 inch or so but still had the most
fun with EME for a year or so.
Thanks to the FB operators
at Arecibo. The live video stream was
interesting to watch especially when the amp was them giving problems

I tried the same thing
with one of my FO432 11 el beams handheld with a
bare FT817 this afternoon. This was right after getting home from the
VHF Conference in Connecticut. I could hear KP4AO very well on JT65
right out of the speaker. My XYL heard the tones 25 meters away while
she was raking leaves in the yard. I handheld the antenna . While at the
conference we experimented with small yagis and a preamp. KP4AO was
pretty good on a 7 el wood boom yagi, weak on a 3 element yagi, and very
weak but audible on just a dipole. The kicker was when AF1T produced his
di-pickle, which was a feedpoint with a small pickle on each side that
approximated a full half wave on 432. KP4AO was barely detectable on the
pickle antenna. Dale, AF1T says he wants to get more gain by building
a
cu-pickle quad! This may be the first reception of eme with VBD (Vinegar
Based Dipole) technology!
We actually erected a small eme station for KP4AO that ran off
emergency power and was situated in the back of the rear parking lot at
the hotel. It attracted much interest and we had great copy on SSB ad
CW
with the KP4AO running an amplifier. They were sort of weak on SSB when
running just 20 watts. We did manage to work them with the VHF club
call, W1RJA. The wx was poor, cold with rain.

I have never uttered
a controversial word on this bb.?This Arecibo event
presented us with a fantastic opportunity.? I truly applaud those who
set this event up and ran it.? However-the object is to make contacts,
and as many as possible in the allotted time.? The CW procedures were
laborious, 73's, multiple calls, excessive id'ing.? They needed a top
notch cw op.? They used SSB, CW, then JT-65. I was waiting for them to
try FM.? Again, ?I am grateful for the chance to try to participate in
this event.? I learned a great deal in preparing and participating in
the process.? Their signal? peaked at 569 using a 910 with 50feet of
LMR400 to a 40 el CP yagi set for LHCP.? I am sure the JT-65 mode gave
flea powered stations an opportunity.?? As I hit this send button they
have 40 minutes left.? They might work a few more. grumble!! W7RLD

Have like I guess, many
others spent a lot of time close to the Radio
this weekend.
Did not make any contact
with Arecibo during the test in April due to
problems in my TX-line so I started Friday evening and hoped to get a
reply and found that signal from there was a bit weaker than expected.
When Faraday did the
best to block, signals was not better than the
normal signal from DL9KR, hi
After listening for
little more than an hour and half and a few
spontaneous calls a reply on CW was a fact but for me I was not sure if
the qso was complete.
Saturday morning started
as planned with a fairly frozen lawn making a
trip there with the Tractor for lowering the Antennas possible with no
deep tracks. Goal was to replace the Preamp for 13cm in the feed point.
But in the cold weather during the change of Preamp I was surprised by
3
cm of Snow in aprox 15 mins. So instead of the Mud-race I wanted to
avoid I ended up in a Snow-race.
Sun noise seemed fair
after the switch but I did not measure any exact
figure. Did instead spend most time during rest of the day trying to get
my first qso on 13cm. Identified some calls but did not receive any
answer to my calling. Some of the strongest where SP6OPN , SV1BTR ,
G3LTF , DL4MEA and OZ4MM.
In the KP4AO Saturday
window I was tempted to make another call due to
earlier uncertain result and this time I got answer on SSB but again not
sure of the Report. This time Arecibo was loud and clear and just
listening to the activity was a great entertainment.
Later back at 2320 I
managed to catch ES5PC to be my first Initial on 13cm!
Thanks Viljo for your
great Ears!
On Sunday also F2TU
managed to copy my replies on his CQ and #2 was a
fact! Thanks Philippe!
Thanks also to Carl
SD3F (SM3AKW) for the coaching during the weekend
keeping the Spirit on top even if we did not manage to Copy each other
on my new Band.
Activity on 2320 was
by natural reasons lower in evening in US window
and I had no cross band. But I heard ES5PC many times during evening
always hoping I found a new station.
Window for KP4AO on
Sunday was monitored from time to time. I also
recorded some examples of the enormous level of the signal. I think
signal on Sunday was strongest ever!
Personally I feel almost
spoiled with all this Happenings during the
weekend.
Eme is fantastic!

UTC on 432.042 MHz, with many 5NN reports being given. The effects of
Libration Fading were clearly evident on all transmissions making solid
copy somewhat difficult during dips in signal level. Significant levels
of RFI in the form of broadband hash and birdies radiated from
neighboring homes raised doubt as to whether a preamp would have done
much to aid reception. (Fortunately, the moon was at 70+ degrees
elevation at the time, minimizing the noise.)
At one point, I hung
the antenna from my clothesline and could still
copy KP4AO! This is only fitting, since the 6 director string in my
quagi were fashioned using clothes hanger wire. :-)
Congratulations and
thanks to all involved!

i was not qrv in 432
mhz EME, but for the event i worked a lot to
building a decent antenna. With the help of lot friend here on the
reflector, in particular VE7BQH Lionel and DF7KF Dithmar,?i had the pdf
and some parts to building a 432 12 el m2 style for the event.
The antenna finished Sunday afternoom, i put it on a chair in the
balcony and pointint to the moon....with an ssb 432 preamp to a ts-2000
and abt 7 meters of low loss cable.
At? 18;40 i beginning to lissen, and surprise i heard some weak SSB
signals, after sometimes was most loud and i can copy several calls
trasmitting from Arecibo, they swicht in CW and i heard very big signal
with the help of linrad....i try to call them with 70 watts and one time
i lissen something?like 1FJ !!! but the delay from Linrad no permit to
lissen the whole call......then try JT65 the better signal was -7 !!!
I enjoy the experiment, glad to heard KP4AO with so loud signal with one
3 meters long yagi.First EME signal in 70 CM for me !
Thanks for the fun...
